Artist Statement
I use an internal first-person soliloquy as a studio method to enter imagined, uncanny realms in which paint, space and body exist in active dialogue. Inside these constructed worlds, I explore ideas of desire and despair relating to the cultural milieu, as they surface through the act of painting itself. My current body of work, Foreverware, is one such world - an imagined dystopia that provides a framework for testing gesture and material behaviour, filtered through performed ideals of femininity.
Drawing from painterly traditions of Abstract Expressionism and Colour Field, my practice situates itself within a lineage that values the emotive force of colour - as well as the Renaissance pursuit of illusion, filtered through abstraction and materiality.
Working through this lens of gestural abstraction, I engage the physical resistance of paint - its weight; drag, scent, density and behaviour - allowing materiality to shape the process. Colour and form construct spaces that feel visceral and dreamlike, holding the viewer in a state of intimacy and unease.
